Immigrant and Refugee Families Meetings

Minneapolis Public Schools has scheduled two meetings to offer information and assistance to Immigrant and Refugee families – and to reaffirm our commitment to welcoming and supporting all families. We are providing information about changing policies, legal resources and social and emotional supports available. On Thursday, February 9th, the Oromo Cultural Club hosted a celebration in Ms. Linda's room. Cultural practices were described, Oromo food was served and along with traditional dancing. Thank you for the informative and fun afternoon Oromo Cultural Club!

On Friday, February 3rd, students from Wellstone spent the day exploring colleges across the state. Project Success took students to Augsburg, St. Cloud, St. Catherine's and MCAD. Students had the opportunity to explore the campus, find out what it is like to be a college student and living situations. Thank you Project Success!

The Minnesota Twins paid a visit to Wellstone IHS on January 25th. They brought stories of how they became professional baseball players. There was also a question and answer session at the end of the event as well as a group photo. Thank you Minnesota Twins!

MPS Passes Sanctuary Resolution

The Minneapolis Board of Education passed the resolution to strengthen existing Minneapolis Public Schools’ (MPS) policies and practices and to declare MPS a safe place for all students and families, regardless of their immigration status, national origin or language. We are committed to the safety and emotional well-being of our students and will continue to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for all. Wellstone International High School (WIHS) provides an equitable education for English Learners (ELs) by meeting academic and social-emotional needs. WIHS builds on the assets and experiences of ELs’ multilingualism and multiculturalism. Students are expected to critically analyze and respond to local and global issues while enhancing awareness of self and others. Academic standards, research-based support systems and experiential learning come together to produce a rich academic setting. Advanced coursework includes college courses and opportunities for students to prepare for post-secondary options.  WIHS utilizes and promotes collaboration and community engagement through enhanced community partnerships.

Wellstone is a Celebration-Eligible School!

The purpose of the Celebration School recognition is to identify Minnesota Title I schools that have demonstrated both excellence on the MMR which measures school performance in the areas of student proficiency, student growth, closure of the achievement gap, and graduation rates as well as success with initiatives that have led to positive student outcomes.

This year Wellstone International High School has been designated a focus school under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The designation is based on student performance data that placed our school among the ten percent of schools making the largest contribution to the state’s achievement gap.
