Wellstone International High School is a "Newcomer Center" designed to serve students up to age 21 with limited to no English language skills or literacy skills in their first language. We offer accelerated English language development and a basic high school curriculum with content classes in Science, Math, English and Social Studies. Health and Physical Education classes are offered after school and in the summer. All languages are welcomed. Many of the staff at Wellstone are fluent in more than one language and many speak a language of the students they serve. Content classes are taught in English. All of the teachers have been training in the SIOP teaching approach, which integrates content and language teaching. Students are able to access content knowledge, English language proficiency and study skills in the same class. A counselor, social worker, school nurse, media specialist and Spanish, Somali and Swahili bilingual associate educators complement the staff. We also have a TAPP program for mother's of newborn and young children.
Vision Statement - Wellstone International High School will provide innovative instruction for new immigrants (up to age 21) that prepares the students for post-secondary education and empowers them to fully participate in society. Mission Statement - To provide educational opportunities for secondary ELL students where English acquisition is supported through Native Language Literacy, Accelerated, Thematic and Interdisciplinary methods, in collaboration with the larger community.
